This past weekend, Twisters saw a 17% increase at the domestic box office from the previous weekend. Twisters’ Box Office Success Explained
Twisters’ 4DX Haul Has Helped The Film
Part of the late success of Twisters is attributable to the film’s return to 4DX this past weekend. This format sees a film shown in 3D in a theater that is also specially equipped to add a sensory dimension through gusting wind and squirting water at audiences at opportune times. After a successful but limited initial run in 4DX, audiences took to social media to beg Regal to bring Twisters back to 4DX. The Twisters distribution team listened to these requests, bringing Twisters back to sold-out 4DX screens this past weekend.
Twisters’ overseas box office haul is far less impressive than its domestic box office, bringing in just under $100 million internationally. Still, combined with the domestic total, Twisters has made an impressive $358.3 million worldwide. This total positions Twisters in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2024 so far, coming in at no. 9 behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The top two grossing films of the year right now are Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, both of which have made over $1 billion.
Twisters‘ box office success is crucial for the film, as it was made on a massive estimated budget of $155 million. This made it such that Twisters would need at least around $300 million, if not far more, to break even. At $358.3 million worldwide, Twisters will likely at least break even if not turn a profit as it gains momentum from this surprise end-of-run growth.
