Transformers One
will appeal more to family audiences, and the PG rating could help it become a box office hit.
Transformers One‘s age rating has now been revealed, and it breaks a 17-year franchise tradition. Directed by Josh Cooley, the latest installment in the Transformers franchise takes place on Cybertron, chronicling the origins of both Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Bryan Tyree Henry) before they became mortal enemies. In addition to Hemsworth and Henry, the Transformers One cast features actors like Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm.
Per FilmRatings.com, the MPA has now given Transformers One a PG rating for “sci-fi violence and animated action throughout, and language.” This PG rating makes it the first film in the franchise since Michael Bay’s 2007 original to not be rated PG-13. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts last year, for example, was rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and language.”

Transformers One’s PG Rating Makes Sense For The Film
The Animated Movie Won’t Be Like Michael Bay’s Transformers Entries
Many of Bay’s Transformers movies were very successful and took advantage of their PG-13 rating, delivering plenty of sci-fi action and moments of sexual humor, as is Bay’s tradition. Transformers One, however, is clearly not attempting to serve as just an animated version of a Bay movie. Instead, Cooley’s upcoming film is aiming to be an even more family-friendly affair with more in common with previous animated Transformers series.
When it comes to animation, PG is often a sweet spot in terms of box office. As Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 have just reinforced with their impressive theatrical performances, these types of animated movies attract family audiences to theaters. Something like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, too, shows the power of making a family-friendly animated adventure. If any of these animated movies had been PG-13, this would have limited their potential audience.
2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts underwhelmed at the box office, and Transformers One now has an opportunity to prove that interest remains in the franchise by tapping into an entirely new audience. It’s likely, for example, that youngsters who are not familiar with the franchise will go to Cooley’s film just because it features colorful animation and giant talking robots. It remains to be seen how die-hard franchise fans respond to Transformers One, but the upcoming film is obviously shaping up to be an interesting departure.
