It was first released in 1999 and has become a cinematic staple, consisting of four feature films, an animated anthology, and several video games. The film prompts viewers to question their reality and follows a computer programmer who comes to the startling realization that he is living in a simulation. Directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the movie stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie Ann Moss, and Lawrence Fishburne.
The Fathom screenings will include an exclusive featurette with Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), as she reflects on the cyberthriller’s legacy. Henwick is known for portraying Bugs in The Matrix Resurrections, which serves as the latest installment in the franchise. The Matrix’s 25th anniversary trailer prompts viewers to see the movie “while it’s still only fiction,” referring to the technological advancements artificial intelligence has seen in recent years. Everything We Know About The Matrix 5
After the release of The Matrix Resurrections, there was speculation among fans over whether a fifth installment would occur. However, in April 2024, Warner Bros. announced that another movie was officially in development. The news came nearly three years after the release of the previous film. While little is known about The Matrix 5, it is confirmed to undergo a major behind-the-scenes change.
The Wachowski sisters will no longer be in directorial roles, passing the torch to Drew Goddard. Goddard had previously worked on projects such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Martian, Daredevil, and The Good Place. He is also slated to write The Matrix 5 script, with Lana Wachowski on board as an executive producer.
The plot remains under wraps, but there are plenty of different directions for the film to take. Some fans hope it will focus on the franchise’s untold prequel story, as there is still much to be explored about The Matrix’s origins. The cast has not yet been announced, but it’s possible that vital players, such as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, will reprise their roles.
