Incredibles 3 gets a promising tease from Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter. The third installment in The Incredibles franchise was formally announced at D23 Expo in August, with the confirmation that Brad Bird would return as director and is hard at work at developing the story. Bird wrote and directed both previous installments of the Pixar franchise, which were massive critical and commercial successes, with the original Incredibles winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar and nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing.

In a recent interview with Fandango at D23, Docter teased Bird’s return to The Incredibles franchise. Praising the filmmaker as an amazing collaborator, Docter discussed how he always puts passion at the forefront of his work, which is evident in a movie like Ratatouille once it’s analyzed on a deeper level. Check out his full comments in the quote and video below:

Brad [Bird] is an amazing collaborator. He’s so fiery and passionate. Different people work different ways. He’s a guy who needs a little more time to build up the steam to get the passion and the power going. I think we’re at that point now. And we’re not sharing any details right now, because it’s still pretty malleable in terms of what the story is actually about. The great thing about Brad’s films, when you look at Ratatouille, on one level, it’s a fun romp about a rat that wants to cook. But, really, when you dig deeper, it’s about “What does it take to do that?” The passion versus opportunity. He’s always got these deeper sociological ideas, and so I think that’s where we’re starting from.

Why Brad Bird Is The Only Choice For Incredibles 3

The filmmaker’s love of the characters gave it a unique imprint.

While not much is known about Incredibles 3‘s story, and not much will be known for a long time, the news of Bird returning to helm the picture is a great sigh of relief for the franchise. Many Pixar franchises had different filmmakers to helm sequels, such as the upcoming Toy Story 5, which will not be directed by Toy Story 4‘s Josh Cooley and instead helmed by WALL-E‘s Andrew Stanton. However, in the case of The Incredibles, only Brad Bird can bring to life the characters he created on screen at the level they are treated.

Bird has a unique style that no other filmmaker working at Pixar can replicate. He has further pushed the boundaries of what is possible in animation with each project he brings to life, whether directly at Pixar with The Incredibles or Ratatouille or even with The Iron Giant in 1999. Bird has always treated animation as an art form and medium and blended genres within his stories to have a universal appeal that kids and adults can enjoy on the same level.

Incredibles 2
was the fourth highest-grossing film of 2018, making over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

This drive is also why his live-action debut with Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol worked, as he treats animation with the same techniques and shot compositions as live-action directors. It’s part of why his movies always feel incredibly detailed and vivid, and it’s also why Bird is the only logical choice to helm Incredibles 3. Audiences may wait a long time for the movie, as he’s in the middle of making Ray Gunn for Netflix and Skydance Animation, but Bird has more than earned the time he needs to get the story right for the third installment in The Incredibles franchise.
