Alien: Romulus has already passed a major milestone at the global box office. The new movie, which was directed by Fede Álvarez and stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, is the seventh installment in the science fiction horror franchise which kicked off with the original Ridley Scott classic in 1979. The Alien: Romulus release is off to a solid start, earning a domestic opening weekend of $41.5 million, marking the second-best debut of the franchise behind Prometheus‘ $51 million in 2012.
Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, the global box office opening weekend for Alien: Romulus is projected to be a total of $108.2 million. This means that the movie is the 23rd movie release to cross the $100 million milestone in 2024, and it has been able to do so in just three days. Additionally, crossing this milestone means that it has already made back its $80 million budget, though it still likely has a way to go in order to hit its break-even point, which may be somewhere in the $160 to $200 million range.
How Alien: Romulus Compares To The Rest Of The Franchise
It Will Quickly Outgross Most Of The Previous Alien Movies
The precedent set by previous titles in the Alien franchise shows that Romulus is likely set to land somewhere between the worldwide grosses of the entries with the third and first-place opening weekends, which are the two most recent prequels, 2017’s Covenant and 2012’s Prometheus, respectively. This would most likely place the new movie’s ultimate total between $250 and $400 million by the end of its run. Because every installment in the original quadrilogy grossed somewhere between $100 and $200 million, Romulus should quickly outgross the foundational classics in the franchise.
However, once those movies’ grosses are adjusted for inflation, Romulus has a tougher task ahead of it. Because the Alien movies came out in many different decades, the changing economy affected their box office totals considerably, altering the overall ranking of their performances and changing the benchmark by which the new movie may need to be measured. Below, see how each movie in the franchise has performed at the box office, both in the raw numbers and adjusted for inflation:
Title |
Worldwide Box Office |
Worldwide Box Office (Adjusted) |
---|---|---|
Alien (1979) |
$184.7 million |
$812.53 million |
Aliens (1986) |
$183.3 million |
$526.53 million |
Alien 3 (1992) |
$159.8 million |
$359.80 million |
Alien Resurrection (1997) |
$161.4 million |
$314.35 million |
Prometheus (2012) |
$403.3 million |
$552.79 million |
Alien: Covenant (2017) |
$240.9 million |
$309.61 million |
Alien: Romulus (2024) |

If Alien: Romulus can gross close to $400 million by the end of its run, it would ultimately be considered the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise. However, when adjusted for inflation, it would essentially only have outgrossed Alien 3, Resurrection, and Covenant, landing it in the exact middle of the overall chart. However, this could still be more than enough for it to be considered a hit and earn the movie a sequel, ensuring the continued longevity of the franchise.
