Robert Downey Jr. has revealed that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man played a role in his understanding of Iron Man‘s potential. Downey has become the biggest actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the breakout success of 2008’s Iron Man helping establish the franchise that would come to dominate theaters to this day. However, the movie was far from a sure thing at the time, and it turns out that the first of Downey’s Iron Man appearances has a link to Maguire’s popular turn as Spider-Man that helped ease Downey’s mind.
On The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter Podcast, Robert Downey Jr. opened up about how Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man helped him see the potential of the MCU’s Iron Man. After visiting Maguire — the actors worked in a few movies together — during the time he was filming his Spider-Man films, Downey saw “how popular [comic book films] were becoming,” realizing Iron Man’s potential. The actors have never shared the screen as their Marvel heroes, but upcoming MCU movies could change that. Check out the full quote below:
“In real time … I saw how difficult they were, how rewarding they could be, and how popular [comic book films] were becoming.
I had been clean long enough … hungry even longer and I could feel [the] obsession coming back with manifesting the best version of myself … I had strangely been furiously strength training six times a week before I even knew [this role] was coming … and my shrink had told me ‘just start acting like something great is gonna happen and get ready for it'”

Tom Holland will return in Spider-Man 4, and the MCU’s Multiverse Saga plans have created the perfect story for Garfield and Maguire to also return.
Could Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man And Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Share The Screen?
There Are A Couple Of Ways For The MCU To Unite The Stars
Now that both Maguire and Downey Jr. are in the MCU, a meeting between the two actors as their Marvel characters could happen. The Multiverse Saga allowed Marvel to bring in Maguire’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home and for RDJ to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom after the death of his Iron Man in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Despite Tony Stark’s death, Downey could still return as Iron Man.
With the actor already back in the MCU, it is hard to imagine that Marvel will pass on the chance of having him play Iron Man at least one more time. The actor could give life to one or more multiverse variants of Tony Stark, which would leave the arc of the MCU’s original Iron Man untouched. Based on Spider-Man: No Way Home having almost reached $2 billion worldwide and the actor being open to coming back, Maguire’s MCU return could happen in one of the two upcoming Avengers movies.

10 MCU Heroes Who Could Take Down RDJ’s Doctor Doom In Avengers: Secret Wars
RDJ’s Doctor Doom will be the villain of the next two Avengers movies, and only a select group of heroes could defeat him in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars feels like the best possible project for Maguire’s Spider-Man and Downey’s Iron Man to finally meet. That would allow a full movie for RDJ to only play Doctor Doom, establishing the MCU’s new main villain in Avengers: Doomsday. Downey could then appear as a version of Tony Stark, with the Avengers recruiting him, Maguire’s Spider-Man, and other multiverse heroes to take down Victor von Doom. The MCU could offer the opportunity for Maguire and Downey to share the screen not only as Spider-Man and Iron Man, but with RDJ’s Doctor Doom also in the mix.
