The announcement that the Iron Man actor would return to the MCU as the villain came as a major shock, but Downey recently revealed talks to play Doctor Doom started one year ago. Avengers: Doomsday‘s story has been tailored after the character, moving away from Kang the Conqueror and his variants, with Doom also facing Marvel’s heroes in Avengers: Secret Wars.
On Instagram, artist @21xfour shared concept art of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, showing the MCU’s new main villain in full glory.
The art features RDJ in formal attire as Victor von Doom with no scars, as well as a possible concept for the Doctor Doom armor. RDJ is a great fit for Doctor Doom for a variety of reasons, with some of them being his acting range to play such a complex villain and the actor’s status in the MCU, which could help fans forget about Kang the Conqueror quickly.

How Marvel Can Finally Deliver A Comics-Accurate Version Of Doctor Doom In The MCU
Marvel Studios Can Expand The MCU With An Iconic Location
There have been two versions of Doctor Doom in live-action movies. The first was Julian McMahon in the 2000s Fantastic Four films, fighting heroes like Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm. Then came Toby Kebbell’s take on the villain in 2015’s Fantastic Four reboot, and like the movie, Doctor Doom’s design proved incredibly controversial. So far, no live-action Doctor Doom has been universally beloved, but Marvel could change that with RDJ and a look at the comics.
The MCU could go for the comic book route and make Latveria a major part of Doctor Doom’s story and drive in
Avengers: Doomsday
and
Secret Wars
.
Besides a quick shot in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Latveria has barely been used in live-action. The Marvel Comics location is Victor von Doom’s birthplace, with the villain becoming the country’s leader later on. The MCU could go for the comic book route and make Latveria a major part of Doctor Doom’s story and drive in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. The first movie could maybe cement that Doom is taking on the Avengers in order to save his people from incursions.

Doctor Doom has played the role of an anti-villain in multiple comic book stories, and with RDJ, who is known for being the MCU’s greatest hero, in the role, that would make sense. With Marvel Studios at the helm and Robert Downey Jr. in the role, the best live-action version of Doctor Doom is likely on the way.
