Inside Out 2 Riley actor Kensington Tallman reveals the unseen emotion she hopes will be explored should a third movie ever be announced. After Kaitlyn Dias starred as the eleven-year-old Riley in the original 2015 movie, Tallman took on the role of a thirteen-year-old Riley as she faces the trials and tribulations of high school in the 2024 sequel. Tallman’s performance of the character sees her grapple with forming her “sense of self” amid new friend groups, opportunities, and a clash between her old emotions and four new personifications.
With Screen Rant attending D23 and able to sit down with Tallman for an interview, the star shared what emotion she would like to explore if she was able to take her character further in a third Inside Out movie. Tallman stated that she would love to see an emotion that personified “goofyness” after Inside Out 2 highlighted the importance of allowing light-hearted fun when growing and due to it being a feeling that would resonate most with her. Check out Tallman’s full explanation below:
That’s a really good question. I feel like goofy. I don’t know if that’s a real emotion, but I feel like I’d want to see a goofy emotion. Because I’m really, really silly, and I feel like this movie has taught me that it’s okay to be silly. It’s okay to be goofy and have fun. So, I feel like that would be a Kensington emotion, for sure. I definitely have a giant Goofball Island.
Which Emotions Didn’t Make It Into Inside Out 2?
Many emotions didn’t fit into the sequel’s story.
While audiences were introduced to Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Nostalgia (June Squibb), there were a total of 12 new emotions cut from Inside Out 2. Many of these emotions, such as Shame and Jealousy, would find themselves cut from the final script due to their functions ultimately being too close to the emotions that did make it into the movie, with their ideas being folded into the final characters. Others, such as Guilt, were cut from the script due to their more complex ideas behind them.
A third
Inside Out
could incorporate more of these more complicated emotions, either as they are or as composite characters.
Not all the cut emotions from Inside Out 2 were inherently veering into negative experiences, though, as emotions personifying Love, Pride, Hope, and Awe were among the cut characters. With Inside Out 2 concluding with Riley’s emotions having helped form her sense of self and reach a sense of clarity, a third Inside Out could incorporate more of these more complicated emotions, either as they are or as composite characters. As such, Riley may have room for an emotion that reminds her to look on the brighter side of life, as Tallman suggests.
Even after two movies, there is still plenty of uncharted territory for the world for a potential Inside Out 3 to expand upon. From little-explored areas of Riley’s mind such as Dream Productions, to the various islands, the franchise continues to offer more ways to explore who Riley is as she grows. As such, a Goofy emotion inspired by Tallman’s pitch could easily find its place alongside Riley’s other emotions as she faces new experiences in life following Inside Out 2.
