The Indian horror movie, which was directed by Amar Kaushik, is a sequel to 2018’s Stree and returns to the town of Chanderi, which is now being haunted by a new entity, a headless creature named Sarkata. Although the number of competing blockbusters at the end of summer means that its chart position is about average for the debut of an Indian movie, its domestic opening weekend is the second-best that North America has seen since in 2024 behind the record-breaking Kalki 2898 AD, which is India’s most expensive movie ever and has now become the region’s sixth highest-grossing release in history. The fact that Stree 2 is able to hold a candle to the debut of that sci-fi epic shows what strong engagement the horror sequel has had with domestic audiences.
It remains to be seen how high the worldwide box office of Stree 2 can climb by the end of its theatrical run.
