Jackpot! puts a major comedic twist on the one-day lawlessness of The Purge, and Screen Rant has a look at a featurette detailing the making of the unique movie. Jackpot! was directed by comedy legend Paul Feig and stars Awkwafina, John Cena, and Simu Liu. Set in 2030, Jackpot! realizes a world in which California establishes a lottery in which whoever kills the winner before sundown will earn their multi-billion dollar prize. Awkwafina’s Katie is the (un)lucky winner, and Cena’s Noel is an amateur lottery protection agent who must do his best to keep her safe.
Screen Rant

Why Jackpot! Looks Like An Action Comedy Worth A Watch
Original action-comedy movies can be hard to find in a film and TV landscape dominated by known IP, so it’s a small tragedy any time one underperforms or underdelivers. Thankfully, Jackpot! looks to have all the right ingredients for a successful entry into the genre. After Rob Yescombe’s screenplay, this begins with Jackpot! director Paul Feig. Feig is no stranger to the world of action comedies, having helmed Spy, The Heat, and the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. Feig’s comedy chops are also legendary, as the director was behind the 2011 hit Bridesmaids and is known for directing a number of episodes of The Office.
The Jackpot! trailer also promises a perfect blend of action and comedy in the movie’s leads. Awkwafina is a veteran of projects with similar tones, with an obvious Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comparison to be made considering Simu Liu’s involvement in Jackpot! Awkwafina is a strong pick to bring out the absurdity of the movie’s near-future world, and can keep audiences grounded in the movie’s version of reality.
The presence of John Cena is also promising, as the actor has proven himself to be a formidable comedic and physical presence. When Screen Rant interviewed Cena about Jackpot!, the actor revealed that he performed most of his own stunts, which can also be seen in the making-of clip above. Cena’s ability to perform stunts clearly inspired by the incredible Jackie Chan will surely help the movie’s fight scenes feel that much more grounded and exciting. The actor’s comedic chops are also top-notch, as those who have seen Peacemaker can attest.
