James Cameron responds to his rumored feud with Roland Emmerich, the former director of the Fantastic Voyage remake. Released in 1966, the original Fantastic Voyage is an Academy Award-winning science fiction movie that was directed by the legendary Richard Fleischer and was based on a story written by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. 17 years after it premiered, Cameron indicated an interest in directing a remake, but later abandoned the project to focus on others. Since then, he’s brought on other directors to helm the movie, including Emmerich.
Now, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy Award-winning producer-director discussed Emmerich’s recent comments where he referred to Cameron as “overbearing,” first questioning, “How is this a headline?“ Cameron agreed that he could be overbearing, but he claims that he made very little contact with Emmerich during their recent attempt at working on the Fantastic Voyage remake. Read his full comments below:
I’ve never said anything negative about Roland. But anyway: Yes, I’m overbearing. Damn right. When it’s a project where I’ve contributed to the writing, I might actually have an opinion on it. I actually don’t even remember talking to Roland Emmerich about Fantastic. I remember the other directors that we worked with for months on end trying to develop that project. If I talked to Roland, it was for two minutes. I have a pretty good memory and I don’t remember that at all.
The Rumored James Cameron And Roland Emmerich Feud Explained
It All Comes Down To Fantastic Voyage
During one of the panels at the just-concluded 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Emmerich shared that he recently lost interest in directing the Fantastic Voyage remake that has remained in development hell for several years. Emmerich added that he exited the project after Cameron was brought on, describing him as overbearing. He also added that he could not be sure at one point if the remake was his or Cameron’s.
Seeing as Emmerich will likely not be returning to direct the
Fantastic Voyage remake, it puts the long-gestating project in limbo once again.
This is, however, not the first time that these two directors have not seen eye to eye regarding the Fantastic Voyage remake. A few years after Cameron decided he was going ahead with the long-awaited project, Emmerich was one of the directors that was briefly considered to lead the project. Emmerich, however, turned down the opportunity because he was unhappy with the script at the time. Other directors who then neared the project included Shawn Levy and Guillermo del Toro.

It may be hard to guess what James Cameron might direct after the Avatar movies but one exciting sci-fi remake film already seems to be on his radar.
Seeing as Emmerich will likely not be returning to direct the Fantastic Voyage remake, it puts the long-gestating project in limbo once again. It is also highly unlikely that Cameron will direct the movie himself, as he seems firmly invested in the Avatar franchise, which is expected to have three new installments. It will be interesting to see if a new director joins Fantastic Voyage in the coming months, or if Cameron will decide to fit the movie into his incredibly busy schedule.
