With just over three months gone since the movie wrapped filming, Mason Thames offers an exciting update on the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake. Thames is leading the upcoming movie as Hiccup Haddock III, the awkward son of the chief of the Viking village who discovers and befriends a dragon he names Toothless and tries to find a way to build a world in which humans and dragons can co-exist. Written and directed by original trilogy helmer Dean DeBlois, the ensemble How to Train Your Dragon remake cast also includes Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Hiccup’s dad.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant for his Netflix comedy movie Incoming, Thames was asked when audiences might start seeing the first looks at the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake. Though careful not to share too many details to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, he did assure that “it shouldn’t be too long of a wait for images or teasers to come out for the film, while also emotionally reflecting on his experience playing Hiccup. See what Thames shared below:

Oh, gosh, I’m gonna get killed here if I answer anything. All I can really say is it shouldn’t be too long of a wait [to see first looks at the movie]. We had so much fun making that movie, and playing Hiccup was such an honor. Those movies are so close to my heart. So getting to portray Hiccup was truly an honor. He’s still a part of me, no matter how I try to escape him. We finished four months ago, and sometimes the way I say stuff, or when I walk around, like, he’s, he’s still a part of me. Sometimes, the way I would say Dragon, like, “[In Hiccup Voice] Dragon.” Just little things like that. But, yeah, inspirational, it was fun.

When Could The First Teasers Arrive For How To Train Your Dragon?

Though the movie may require an extensive amount of VFX work in post-production to bring its flying creatures to life, the fact that How to Train Your Dragon wrapped filming in May 2024 paired with Thames’ comment above does point toward the first teasers for the live-action remake coming sooner than later. That being said, considering the movie isn’t set to hit theaters until June 13, 2025, Universal may be waiting for the film to be completed in full before offering audiences a first look at the finished product.

Considering studios often attach the first looks at some of their biggest projects to new releases, there are a few titles that seem primed for Universal to feature a How to Train Your Dragon trailer. The first is that of The Wild Robot in September, not only because of its family-friendly tone, but also because of it being a DreamWorks production, of which the original Dragon trilogy was. The other potential candidates are Piece by Piece, the Pharrell biopic told entirely through Legos, in October and Dog Man, another DreamWorks release set for a January release.

Dog Man
is a spinoff of the
Captain Underpants
franchise, with the co-developer of the Netflix sequel show attached to direct.

With few recent updates on Dog Man and Piece by Piece being more for adults than children, even with its Lego animation, it does seem more likely that The Wild Robot would be the first to include a How to Train Your Dragon teaser, if Universal is ready to do so. That being said, considering many studios surprise release images and teasers via social media, it’s just as possible for the first looks at the upcoming live-action remake to be saved for separate from any studio release for the window of time the studio wants to begin building anticipation for it.
