Law Abiding Citizen
earned mostly poor reviews from critics, but fared generally better with audiences.
Law Abiding Citizen makes Netflix’s top 10 chart 15 years after its release. Directed by F. Gary Gray, Law Abiding Citizen stars Gerard Butler as Clyde, a man who decides to dish out his own violent form of vigilante justice after the Philadelphia criminal justice system lets his wife and daughter’s killer go free. The film, which also stars Jamie Foxx, wasn’t well-received upon its release in 2009 and has only a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, however, data shared by Netflix reveals that Law Abiding Citizen is experiencing success on streaming. The film ranks as the fifth most popular movie on the service globally for the week of August 5 – 11, sporting 10.5 million hours viewed and 5.8 million views total. Law Abiding Citizen beats the likes of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Bad Guys, and Jack Reacher, but falls short of movies like Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and Kingsman: The Secret Service.

The Gerard Butler Movie Was A Mixed Bag
Though critics didn’t tend to enjoy Law Abiding Citizen, audiences were generally easier on the Butler thriller. This more positive reception from audiences, however, wasn’t quite enough to make Law Abiding Citizen a box office smash hit.

Law Abiding Citizen’s Twist Ending Explained
Law Abiding Citizen is a 2009 action movie starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. Here’s the movie’s explosive ending explained.
Made on an estimated budget of $53 million, Law Abiding Citizen ended up grossing $127.9 million worldwide, meaning, if it was a success, it would only have been a very modest one. Using the general Hollywood rule of thumb, the film was likely looking at a break-even point of roughly $132 million. These figures can vary, however, and it’s certainly possible that Law Abiding Citizen did end up becoming profitable while in theaters.
Since Law Abiding Citizen was probably right around its break-even point at the box office, it almost certainly ended up turning a profit on home viewing platforms. Butler has proven to be a consistent draw in this regard, and his action thrillers tend to perform well on digital and streaming in the years after their release. While Law Abiding Citizen may not have been much of a hit back in 2009, it’s certainly finding its audience now on Netflix.
