John Cena has shared his thoughts on the fate of Coyote vs. Acme. The movie, which blends live-action and animated elements, is a courtroom comedy starring Cena, Will Forte, Lana Condor, who play characters opposite iconic Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote, who has filed a lawsuit against the Acme corporation for the consistent failure of their products in helping him capture the Roadrunner. In late 2023, the Coyote vs. Acme movie was controversially shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery as a tax write-down along with Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt.
John Cena recently spoke with TheWrap while promoting his new movie Jackpot!. During their conversartion, he discussed the Coyote vs. Acme cancellation and shared that, while he believed in the project, it is now in somebody else hands and he is choosing to believe that it was “shelved for the right reasons,” because otherwise he “would have tremendous shame and regret.” He acknowledges that there are many different perspectives on the situation and his is one of many, though he personally loves the movie and was invested in it “heart and soul.” Read his full quote below:
There’s a lot there. And everyone’s perspective is different. We don’t own the film. That’s the tough part about this business, you do have a sense of ownership because you invest heart and soul. And [director] Dave Green and everybody involved, we made what we thought was a good movie. I would have liked to [have] seen it given a chance. But I’m just one person. And if it was shelved, I would have to think that it was shelved for the right reasons and it was a good business decision. I think I would have tremendous regret and shame if I look back on the legacy of the movie and it was shelved for reasons other than that. So I have to believe in the process. And I love the movie, my heart and soul is in there, but it’s somebody else’s project to do what they want with and they’ve chosen accordingly.
Jonn Cena’s Relationship With Warner Bros. Discovery Is Complicated
One Of The Star’s Biggest Projects Is On Max
Cena has had one of the most diplomatic responses to the Looney Tunes movie’s cancellation so far, but this may make sense considering the fact that the star still has a major project being made with Warner Bros. Discovery. The Coyote vs. Acme star also holds a major role in the DC Universe, as he plays the lead role in the Max series Peacemaker, which will be returning with the upcoming season 2. The show, a spinoff of The Suicide Squad, is also the anchor for the impending spinoff Waller.

Peacemaker was a runaway success, growing its audience weekly, to the point that it was renewed a day before its season 1 finale. While John Cena also holds roles in many other major franchises, including a recent appearance in Fast X, it likely wouldn’t behoove the star to speak out against the company behind one of his biggest current hits, even if he was perturbed by the movie being shelved. However, his role on the show also offers him insight into a broader spectrum of projects and employees under the company’s umbrella, and that may affect his overall opinion.
In addition to John Cena,
Peacemaker
season 1 starred Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.
Ultimately, whether or not Coyote vs. Acme has an ability to connect with audiences will remain unknown unless it is released, either by Warner Bros. Discovery or another distributor. Only then can it be determined if it was a wise business decision to shelve the project, which could be one reason for the complicated feelings Cena expresses in this quote.
