RED finds new success on Netflix 14 years after its release. Based on the DC Comics series of the same name, the 2010 action comedy follows Frank Moses, a former black-ops agent who reassembles his old team to uncover who was behind an assassination attempt on his life. Bruce Wills leads RED‘s cast, with the all-star ensemble also including Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Rebecca Pidgeon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, and James Remar.

Now, 14 years after its original release, Willis’ action-comedy comic book adaptation has found new success on Netflix. RED ranked eighth on Netflix’s Top 10 films in the United States for the week of August 5-11. In the lower half, it was ranked between White Chicks and Tarot in sixth and seventh place, and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and The Emoji Movie in the final two spots.

RED Continues To Be A Hit On Netflix

Its Critical & Commercial Success Explained

Upon its release, RED was a solid critical and commercial success that surpassed expectations and even spawned a sequel. The first film was generally well-received by critics, as RED reviews pointed out that while the film might not deliver the intense thrills one would expect from an action movie, it surpasses most of its big-budget peers with its sharp wit and director Robert Schwentke’s distinct style. RED received 72% Rotten Tomatoes scores from critics and audiences, and even received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, a rarity for action movies.

The Kids Are All Right
won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in 2010.

In addition to critical success, RED was also a solid box office hit, debuting at around $22.5 million during its opening weekend. It ended its box office run with $90 million in the United States, combined with $108.6 million internationally, falling just short of $200 million with a worldwide total of $199 million against its $58-60 million budget. This combined critical and commercial success was enough to earn a sequel, albeit a belated one, with RED 2 released nine years later in 2019.

Continuing to adapt the comic book series, RED 2 brings back Frank Moses as he once again reassembles his old team of operatives, this time to track down a missing portable nuclear device. In addition to Willis, Malkovich, Mirren, Parker, and Cox all reprised their roles from RED alongside Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and David Thewlis joining the cast. Unfortunately, because of Willis’ retirement in 2022 due to health issues, RED 3 is unlikely, though audiences can always enjoy the first two films streaming on Netflix.
