Borderlands
film received scathing reviews, 9% on Rotten Tomatoes, and failed at the box office with $8.6 million opening.
The Borderlands poster is remade with a biting and honest take on the just-released film. Released in theaters on August 9, Borderlands is a video game adaptation film about a team of outlaws and misfits who work together to find a missing girl who may be involved in unlocking huge amounts of power. Borderlands’s leading cast includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Geena Gershon, Edgar Ramirez, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Now, new art from @weeklyplanetposters reveals an altered poster for Borderlands.
The poster directly mimics one of the real Borderlands posters, with the group of misfits all together in one spot, in the middle of action and preparing for an adventure. The tagline reads the real “chaos loves company,” and the cast names are included as per any poster. The one catch is that the name of the film is changed from Borderlands to the critical title “Boredomlands.”
Unpacking Borderlands’ Reception
Borderlands Failed At The Box Office And With Critics
This satirical poster for Borderlands comes just after the film was released in theaters to poor reception. Borderlands‘ reviews were terrible, receiving a single-digit 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The reviews for the film were absolutely scathing, with the Los Angeles Times calling it “an insipid mishmash of trite genre tropes.” Others criticized its poor translation of strong elements from the game into the film. Audiences liked the movie slightly better than critics, but still gave it a rotten 51% approval rating.

Borderlands takes some big liberties with the source material, introducing characters early and tweaking their in-universe connections and history.
Audiences also showed their distaste for Borderlands because they did not show up to the theater to see the movie. Borderlands opened to a mere $8.6 million at the box office. These single digit-millions meant that the movie underperformed expectations, and did not even come close to being the top film during the weekend of its release. The film only barely made it into the top 5, coming in at no. 4. Topping the box office charts this weekend was Deadpool & Wolverine, which was in its third weekend in theaters.
With this paltry opening, Borderlands is more than likely to lose money. Based on a popular video game IP and employing an all-star cast, the production company had enough faith in the movie to give it an estimated $100 million budget. The first weekend for Borderlands shows that that faith was entirely misplaced, as the movie may not even gross half of this budget. The cultural zeitgeist is already catching on to how much of a failure Borderlands is, as evidenced by the creation of the “Boredomlands” poster.
