couldn’t work without Burton, but it would also need a compelling reason to exist from a story and character perspective.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice director Tim Burton addresses whether there’s a Beetlejuice 3 on the horizon. After the first film became a cult classic following its release in 1988, Burton is now returning to his horror-comedy world for a sequel, which features Michael Keaton reprising his role as Betelgeuse. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice releases in theaters next month, with anticipation understandably high regarding whether the sequel will live up to the original.
In a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+), Burton and producer Tommy Harper are asked about whether there’s any possibility of a Beetlejuice 3. While Harper teases that “anything could happen,” the publication writes that Burton “noticeably squirms at the suggestion of a Beetlejuice franchise.” Check out Harper and Burton’s comments below:
Harper:
“We haven’t talked about where it could go from here, we just talked about making one really good movie. Make it the best you can, and then anything could happen.”
Burton:
“I don’t know. That would make me sound like William Castle or something – ‘the biggest, the greatest, the most fabulous motion picture since Glen or Glenda!’ I hope for the best, really. I just feel good this was done in the spirit and feeling of the original. However the movie does, it was a very good experience for me in that way.”

Will There Be A Beetlejuice 3?
Why Another Tim Burton Sequel Isn’t Guaranteed
The main determining factor for a Beetlejuice 3 will be how the upcoming sequel performs at the box office. The original movie came out 36 years ago, and there’s certainly no guarantee the follow-up will be a smash hit. The sequel does have several factors working in its favor, though, including an impressive cast. In addition to Keaton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is also bringing back Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, with newcomers including Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.

The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cast, then, could attract both new audiences and those familiar with the original. As has been revealed in trailers and interviews, Burton has also returned to a very classical filmmaking style with the sequel, relying on the same practical production methods as he did for the original. Burton is clearly essential to bringing the world of Beetlejuice to life, and it’s hard to imagine another entry in the franchise working without him.
In order for Beetlejuice 3 to work, Burton would have to return, but the film would also need a reason to exist from a storytelling perspective. Whether there are any obvious story threads left to explore will obviously depend on how the upcoming sequel ends. So far, then, Beetlejuice 3 is definitely more of a question mark than a sure thing, but a warm reception to the upcoming installment would certainly make another movie more likely.
