A trailer for Y2K has been released, revealing details about A24’s upcoming horror comedy that sees ’90s-era tech get violent after the Y2K bug actually happens. In real life, the Y2K bug was a hypothesized coding issue involving the formatting of calendar data in computers, something that would have caused major issues for digital infrastructures around the world. Thankfully, this didn’t happen, but it hasn’t stopped an upcoming A24 horror movie from coming out with a similar premise. The film was first announced in March 2023, the directorial debut of actor Kyle Mooney.

Now, A24 has released the first trailer for Y2K, revealing the movie’s horror comedy aspects as ’90s-era tech comes to life in a violent way following the titular computer bug actually happening.

The trailer establishes teenage boy Eli (Jaeden Martell) getting invited to a party by his crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler), only for technology to go haywire when the Y2K bug happens. Alongside his friend Danny (Julian Dennison), Laura, and other surviving kids from the party, the group tries to put a stop the tech from destroying the world. The trailer for the upcoming horror comedy promises a fun, occasionally terrifying story, as the group is attacked by everything from flying VHS tapes to a Tamagotchi using a power drill. Because all the ’90s tech is now sentient and murderous, the footage hints at the interesting ways it will be hunting down the main characters as they try to stop the disaster. Given the global nature of what they’re about to take on, though, anything could happen as they attempt to keep the titular computer bug from destroying their home.
